The kelp has arrived!!!!! We are eating our lunch, then we will go out to Sam's Club and pick up some whole chicken, blueberries and yams and at 7:30 pm tonight, our dogs will get their first raw meal! I am so excited but I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a tiny bit nervous, especially that the transition period could trigger a grand mal seizure. (Henry has idiopathic epilepsy) Could you please keep my furbabies in your prayers as they make this transition and go through the detox period?

Aloha pups. I just wanted to wish you all luck on your first raw meal. Keep in mind that you want it to be as bland as possible, and go super easy on the fruits and veggies because those can really upset a new-to-BARF tummy. My brother and I still can only tolerate about 2 teaspoons of veggie mush with dinner each night, and it wasn't until we were 2 full weeks into the diet that we could stomach proteins other than chicken. Digestive enzymes and about a tablespoon of yogurt with live cultures got us through our first week of meals -- and we still get them at every meal now. They work miracles!
Keep some plain, canned pumpkin on hand, and some slippery elm if you can find it... Just in case you wind up getting plagued with the "runs" like we did. A tsp or 2 of pumpkin really helps!
Thanks for the tips! I have 3 cans of plain pumpkin on hand. Our boys are already used to getting a couple tablespoons of either cooked yam or blueberries each day,(it's how I give Henry his taurine capsule) so do you think that means they are already used to the veggies? Or should I still go easy? I have on hand 9 lbs of chicken, a 1.22 lb yam,(which I will lightly pre bake) and 12 oz. blueberries. I am going to grind both dog's meals for the first week, then if they are doing ok, I will let Henry try some turkey neck and see how he does with chewing that.
I just realzed made it sound like that was the entire meal I was planning for my dogs, lol. So I want to clarify, this food is going to get worked out over the next week or so, and I am going to make the veggie mash seperate from the chicken.
